A Sight Saving Surgery

Posted: Updated:
Beverly Hills, CA -

This morning, a girl who is almost totally blind undergoes a surgery that will actually save her sight...Araksya Karapetyan was in Beverly Hills with this amazing surgery.

A reminder to never take anything for granted...things we don't think about- like our eyesight - such a precious gift.

After struggling for six months, Natasha Payton can see clearly now, which says a lot considering she has been slowly going blind.

Natasha knew she had a problem when she started having a hard time making out what it said on the board at school. She went in to get her eyes checked and was told she had Keratoconus, and if something wasn't done about it quickly, she was going to go completely blind.

Chances are unless you have Keratoconus or know someone with the disease, then you haven't heard much about this progressive and degenerative corneal disorder, which can cause blurred vision, glare, multiple images.

Keratoconus started to affect every aspect of Natasha's life- she had to quit her job, she couldn't drive, and she was essentially on the verge of never being able to read and write.

Natasha's mother wrote a letter to the Make a Wish Foundation, and that letter made its way to Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler's office. Dr. Wachler contacted his charity and the costs of the procedure were generously covered. This procedure saved Natasha's sight and gave her a chance to see a future.

He describes the disease as "being in a carnival funhouse but its no fun and can rob people of living a normal life."

Dr. Wachler emphasizes the importance of getting your eyes checked at a young age. It turns out, Natasha always had this condition, she just didn't know about it until her eyes started to fail her.

One in five hundred people have Keratoconus. If it isn't treated early, you eventually will go blind
