3 Dems, 2 Republicans vie for Mass. senate seat

Posted: Updated:

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - Three Democrats and two Republicans will be running for the state Senate seat vacated earlier this month by Sen. Michael Knapik.

The Democratic candidates who will face off in the Oct. 8 primary are Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik, Holyoke City Councilor David Bartley and Holyoke Fire Commission Chairman Christopher Hopewell.

Republicans competing in the primary are Westfield state Rep. Donald Humason Jr. and Holyoke Veterans Services Officer Michael Franco.

The special election is Nov. 5.

Each candidate has turned in nomination papers with at least 300 signatures from registered voters to local registrars of voters for certification. So far only Tautznik has submitted nomination papers with the certified signatures to the Secretary of State's office.

Knapik is taking a job at Westfield State University.
