MBTA: Corporate sponsorships won't fix budget

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The MBTA says two kinds of corporate sponsorships will bring in an extra $1 million in the current fiscal year - not enough to put a real dent in the agency's budget deficit.

The report said under one contract, the MBTA will receive $795,000 for the use of three so-called "wallscapes" at the South Station Bus Terminal, the Massachusetts Avenue Vent Shaft, and the Courthouse Silver Line Station.

A second contract will bring in $250,000 for the use of bus shelters by a company that maintains the shelters and sells advertising.

The MBTA has an estimated $115 million deficit. A series of tax increases, including a 3 cent-per-gallon hike in the gas tax, are designed to close the gap.

MBTA naming rights have been contentious, with critics saying they take diminish the city's history.
