Springfield pays tribute to Vietnam veterans

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield is paying tribute to its veterans who died during the Vietnam War.

A ceremony is planned Saturday at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Monument in Mason Square.

Organizer Tony Bass says relatives of the five names etched on the memorial will attend. He tells The Republican newspaper that the ceremony will also honor all 50 of the city's residents who died during the Vietnam War as well as those behind the memorial's installation.

Bass says the monument was the first in the United States dedicated to the Vietnam War. It was installed in 1968 while the war was ongoing and anti-war protests roiled the nation.

Bass is in the process of having the memorial placed on the National Registry of Historic Places
