ATLANTA -

The family of a 5-year-old boy injured by a falling tree last month says the youngster is starting to communicate with them.

Tristen Wilson has been at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston since the accident on August 9. The 5-year-old and his 3-year-old sister, Anslee, were playing outside a friend's house in Walton County when an old 40-foot tall tree fell on top of them.

Tristen suffered a broken back, punctured lung and swelling on his brain. The injuries that night were considered life-threatening.

Now, nearly a month later, Tristen's father, Ron Saint, said that the boy can open his eyes, breathe on his own and is beginning to respond to family members by nodding.

"He loves for people to hold his hand," Saint said. "He can actually give you a thumbs up if you ask for it."

On Tuesday, surgeons at Egleston will try to reconstruct Tristen's skull.

"I'm not as frightened by this one, because it's not actual brain surgery, it's putting a bone back together," Saint said.  "And I would love to see his head look like little Tristen's again instead of like it does now."

The surgery will go a long way in determining when Tristen can leave the hospital and begin rehab. His father knows he has a long way to go and doctors are not offering any long-term prognosis, but Saint believes the same thing that saved his son three weeks ago will continue to guide him going forward.

"Just prayers - -they're great. We read them all night long when we can't sleep.  They're wonderful. They keep smiles and they really keep our spirits up, so I don't want the prayers to stop. Come on with them," Saint said.

The family has set up a website for donations for medical expenses.  Click here for more info: teammightyt.wix.com/tristen
