Bird forced Chicago-bound Southwest flight to return to Raleigh-Durham

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A bird strike forced a Chicago-bound Southwest Airlines plane to return to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Airport officials said the jet took off just before 6 p.m. Monday, but returned 30 minutes later after hitting the bird. One engine was damaged and shut down.

Five crew members and 124 passengers were on board. No one was injured. After the plane landed safely, passengers said there was a "a roar of applause."

Southwest brought in another plane to give Chicago-bound travelers the option to leave later Monday night.
