Skunk Funk Behind Dozens of Complaints To Cherry Hill Officials

Posted: Updated:
CHERRY HILL, N.J. -

Sometimes love stinks. That's what comes to mind when thinking about the old cartoon of Pepe Le Pew from back in the day. But now, it seems this fictional character has now come to life in modern day Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

"We actually have them in our backyard. They come out when we're sitting on the porch. They'll come up onto the porch," said Mary Hones while taking a walk in her neighborhood. She's happy for a nice day, not only for sunshine and low humidity, but also the rare absence of skunk funk.

"The smell is just terrible. You can smell it in the morning, night time and it permeates into the house too," said Mary.

We all know the smell and have probably turned up our noses at it before, but some are picking up the phone and calling to report it.

"We've been getting a lot of calls from people who've been smelling skunks throughout the day, particularly at night," said Erin Gill. She's with the Cherry Hill Township Mayor's Office. She says they've been skunked, not by the animal, but by a few dozen calls over a two week period.

"I think they're actually looking to see if the township does anything to control the population of skunks, or if they will set up traps and try to relocate them to another area," she says.

Laugh if you will, but neighbors Anne Wallace and Dina Ciancitto are super serious.

"Oh it's pungent. It just hits you in the face. It's bad," the women agree.

Anne says, "The smell wakes you up at night, it's so bad. I don't know if it's getting in the air conditioning vents or what, but it's every other night. People say they can't keep their windows open at night." Her dog has been skunked before. She's an expert on getting rid of that smell.

"Vinegar, water and we use tomato juice," she said.

Township officials say that one way to keep skunks and their funk out of your area is to spray dog and fox urine around. Try collecting that. Either way you're looking at a stinky situation.
