Vanpooling saves co-workers time, money on commute

KENNESAW, Ga. -

Right now, gas prices are hovering around $3.50 a gallon. That means the cost of your daily commute to and from work is likely rising by the day; especially if you're spending that time sitting in traffic.

Have you ever thought about cheaper and quicker ways to get to work? That's where Georgia Commute Options comes in. SKYFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley checked it out to find out exactly how it works.

GCO is a branch of the Clean Air Campaign, working with employers and drivers to get you to work cheaper and cleaner.

A few years ago, Kennesaw resident Rita Merullo says she decided enough was enough. The Home Depot employee says she decided to look into van-pooling with other co-workers who were headed to the Depot's headquarters in Smyrna.

Cary Outlaw said, "I got involved to save money. When I started, gas prices were going higher and higher, and I needed, somehow or another, to save money. I live 30 miles from here."

Barbara Herrold said, "Driving back and forth from work was very stressful."

Now, about eight employees meet up at two locations – and pile in.

At a flat $100 a month, it's saving them a lot of money.

Tedra Cheatham, executive director of the Clean Air Campaign, said, "When you really start looking at what commute costs you actually have in getting to and from work, for some people that actually adds up to a day's wage per week."

The group works with employers and commuters to provide some resources and support for people who chose a method other than driving alone to and from work. They pair up with carpoolers, vanpoolers and even help a network of more than 1,600 employers coordinate options – including teleworking from home.

The services through GCO are free. You can even be eligible for cash prizes and gift cards for switching to a cleaner commute. Carpooling and vanpooling can also get you a discount on your insurance.
