Officer Apprehends Bank Robbery Suspect Who Hid In A Bush

UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

An alleged bank robber didn't really get too far from the Upper Darby TD Bank, about a half a block to be exact. A Broomall, Delaware County man is behind bars tonight, and he has a 30-plus year police veteran to thank for putting him there.

Upper Darby police got the call about three this afternoon. Someone had just robbed the TD bank on Garrett Road.

"There were probably 15 police cruisers in the area within a minute after," says Mike Chitwood of the Upper Darby Police.

One of them was community police officer Thomas Nee.

"I don't think he was real happy to see me at the time," Nee recalls.

Within 15 minutes of the bank robbery, just half a block away and just off the trolley tracks in the bushes, Nee saw the suspect.

"Shocked because it's not every day you find a guy hiding in the bushes, especially if you just had a bank robbery not too far away," reflects Nee.

And just like that, the man confessed.

"I asked him what he was doing there, and he just stated he just robbed a bank and the money was in his rear back pocket," Nee describes.

$2,200 stuffed in pants was recovered at scene. This was all in a day's work for the long time veteran of the department and Upper Darby native.

"I've been in the business for 32 years, and it's always been, right place, right time," says Nee.

Nee may be a bit of a hero around the township tonight, but he still has a job to do. In fact, tonight he was honored at the very township council meeting he was assigned to patrol.

"I guess you work your whole career, all the hours and times he's made arrests and everything else, to have this kind of accolade. You can rest he'll be back in here for some award for Tommy Nee," said Thomas Micozzi, the mayor of Upper Darby.

The suspect in the robbery has been identified as 28 year old Rajbir Singh of Broomall. Singh has a criminal history of theft. He's awaiting processing at the police department.
