Detroit city clerk candidate files for bankruptcy, is sued by her former attorney

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Todd Perkins, the former attorney for City Clerk candidate D. Etta Wilcoxen is suing her campaign for unpaid attorney fees.

Fox 2's Ron Savage spoke to Wilcoxen, who responded saying, "We paid Mr. Perkins and his firm in full. He sat with me and my committee members and told us that he was putting additional attorneys on our case at no cost to us. We have paid him in full. If Mr. Perkins is asking us for additional monies, he did not serve us with any lawsuit. The first time we are hearing of this is from you. He is attempting to extort money from us."

Perkins also stated his case to Savage, saying, "She actually indicated she doesn't owe us any money. We beg to differ and sometimes that's why you have to go to court, unfortunately."

Perkins also explains why he is suing Wilcoxen's campaign - because he's learned she is filing for bankruptcy.

VIDEO: Wilcoxen explains filing bankruptcy to Fox 2's Ron Savage, where she says "I am under water in my home like the majority of Americans."

Wilcoxen says her bankruptcy will have no effect on her election chances.

Perkins did not say the amount he's asking for, but would say it is less that $10,000.
