NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Three smaller-than-average people are being sought for questioning in the bigger-than-average theft of nearly $200,000 worth of diamonds from a jewelry store in west suburban Naperville.

Naperville police turned Wednesday to the public for help in identifying and finding the two diminutive women and the man believed responsible for the theft. Naperville Crime Stoppers has posted a reward of up to $1,000 for information about the case.

Police Sgt. Lou Cammiso said the incident occurred about noon Aug. 26 at Precious Fine Jewelry. The store is located at 2835 Showplace Drive, in the Naperville Crossings shopping center northwest of 95th Street and Route 59.

The man who took part in the alleged theft stands about 5 feet tall, according to a Crime Stoppers release. Cammiso said he entered the store first and "asked to see loose diamonds for a setting" he wanted made.

Cammiso said the first of the two women then came inside the store and "asked the same clerk for assistance, distracting him away from the diamonds." The salesman "put the diamonds behind the counter and attended to her," he said.

The second woman at that point entered the store, "reached behind the counter and took the box" of diamonds while the clerk waited on the first woman, Cammiso said.

Recognizing the ruse, the salesman followed the trio out of the store. Cammiso said they left the area on foot in different directions.

Cammiso said the stolen diamonds were valued at $185,000.

In addition to being about 5 feet tall, the man was described as Hispanic, between the ages of 20 and 25 and weighing about 150 pounds, the Crime Stoppers release stated. Both women were also Hispanic, between the ages of 20 and 25, weighing about 130 pounds each and standing "slightly taller than the male subject," according to the release.

Cammiso added at least two of the alleged thieves spoke with "slight accents."

Witnesses to the theft, those who recognize any of the suspects or those who have other information about the case are asked to call Naperville Crime Stoppers at 630-420-6006. Callers can remain anonymous.
