A University In Wyoming Bans Cell Phone Use

Posted: Updated:

One liberal arts university bans cell phones and other electronic devices like TVs. Wyoming Catholic College makes all its students relinquish their devices when they start school. Their devices are locked a box in each dorm room, and students may only check them out in emergencies.

According to a report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average 8-18 year old spends about seven hours and 38 minutes using entertainment media per day. How do the 112 students at this university cope?

According to Erin Mulligan, a junior from New Hampshire, it is quite a release.

Mulligan tells Yahoo News that "when you are no longer captivated by technology, you find your true and real self."

The only use of Internet and computers use allowed is to do research online, call home via Skype and access the college email service. The college has only had two infractions

"We don't see this as thumbing our nose at tech and modern culture," Jonathan Tonkowich, Dean of Students, told Yahoo News. "We're allowing a freedom and a vacation from all that so that students can work on something different: true friendship, true virtue, true study."

In fact, WCC is not the only school to ban electronics, Deep Springs College, in Nevada also has decided to ban electronics.

"We are so tech savvy these days," Milligan tells Yahoo News. "But something that is really prevalent is our inability to genuinely communicate at a human-to-human, face-to-face level."
