Accused 'obituary burglar' from Billerica charged with attempted break-in

TEWKSBURY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A man accused of breaking into a family's home while they were attending their father's funeral in Dec. 2012 was arrested again Thursday amid allegations that he tried to break into another home in Tewksbury.

Michael Shannon, 20, of Billerica, is charged with attempted breaking and entering, receiving stolen property over $250, and possession of burglarious tools.

Investigators responded to a home on Oakland Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday after the residents reported someone was breaking into their home. While en-route to the home, the residents gave police a description of a car that fled the scene. A car matching the description was stopped at the intersection of East and Shawsheen streets.

While investigating, police claim they found several pieces of jewelry in the car, as well as a bolt cutter. During their probe, police determined the suspect only attempted to enter the Oakland Ave. home and that there were no signs of a break-in.

Police do not know where the jewelry Shannon had in his possession came from. They are asking anyone who believes they were the victim of a theft in the area to contact Tewksbury police.

Shannon is also accused of breaking into a home on Elm Street in Dec. 2012. Investigators in this case said it was likely an "obituary burglary," in which robbers target homes through death notices.
