GOP mayoral candidates clash in final debate

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The top two Republican candidates in the New York City mayoral race met for a debate on Sunday for the last time before Tuesday’s primary.

The debate was testy at various times as Ex-MTA chairman Joe Lhota and billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis discussed the NYPD's policies and each other's strengths and weaknesses.

Lhota has led in polls but Catsimatidis has ramped up his campaign ads on television and the debate was his last chance to close the gap before the primary. Tuesday’s primary turnout among republicans is expected to be low compared to the heavily contested Democratic primary.

Both candidates said they support NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and the controversial “Stop and Frisk” policy.

The two candidates also said they would hire more police officers if elected mayor.
