Boston charitable group acquired by NY nonprofit

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - One of Boston's oldest charitable organizations has been acquired by a New York-based nonprofit.

Community Work Services, founded in 1877, has been acquired by Fedcap. The deal is scheduled to be announced Monday.

Community Work Services helps people enter the workforce, seek advancement and pursue higher education to achieve greater economic self-sufficiency. The organization helps 800 people annually, including those with disabilities, people on public assistance, the homeless, veterans, older workers and those living in poverty.

Following the acquisition, Community Work Services' mission will remain unchanged and it will continue to operate independently under its current management team.

Fedcap will provide management, financial and infrastructure support.

Fedcap officials say in an age of shrinking government grants and reductions in private donations, charities combining efforts are necessary to avoid cutting services.
