BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Twelve candidates hoping to fill Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino's shoes squared off in a debate Monday at Suffolk University.

It was the first chance for the mayoral candidates to differentiate themselves from a crowded field, and at times, the gloves came off.

State Rep. Martin Walsh fielded several questions about his history as a labor leader. Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley was grilled on why he sends his children to private schools. And former State Rep. Charlotte Golar-Richie denied accusations that she tried to push out other African Americans of the race. But it was the proposed casino at Suffolk Downs in East Boston that dominated the debate.

The primary is set for September 24.
