(FOX 11 / CNS) The Pacific Battleship Center will honor fallen first-responders of 9/11 during a day of observance commemorating the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The event -- part of the Battleship IOWA Remembers series -- will take place aboard Battleship Iowa and feature a presentation of colors and ceremonial wreath.

From Hal Eisner:

Mary Lou Lopez held a small flag, had a top with a sequined American Flag today and wore her feelings on her sleeve. Lopez sobbed throughout a short memorial service on the US Iowa remembering those who died on 9/11. The tears were falling from her eyes as she remembered the morning of 9/11/01 as if it were yesterday. She remembered "those poor people" she saw on TV who died. There were tears for the rescuers who ran toward the danger instead of away from it. The "poor people" who, she says, could have been any one of us.

There were 20 or 30 people who came out to the one-time US battleship to remember the terrorist attack 12 years ago. Every one I spoke with said the images were clearly still in their minds. Sgt. David Vegas told me he joined the Marines because of those images stuck in his head. He decided he wanted to defend our country. On this 9/11 he led the color guard that started this year's service. Taps, ringing bells, reading of victims names ... all part of the ceremony in which the message was, as with all of these services, never forget. Mary Lou Lopez says she never will.
