Carl Yastrzemski to be immortalized with statue outside Fenway Park
Rendering of the statue
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Boston Red Sox plan to immortalize Carl Yastrzemski with a statue at Fenway Park.
The Sox announced Wednesday they will unveil the statue of the legendary left fielder Sept. 22. Yaz's statue will appear alongside an elite group of Sox legends, including Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Bobby Doerr, and Johnny Pesky, outside Gate B.
Yaz, or "Captain Carl," was a member of the Red Sox for 23 years. His storied career included 3,419 hits, 452 home runs, and 17 all-star game appearances. The left fielder's accolades include seven Golden Gloves and a Triple Crown win in 1967.
Number 8 was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, six years after taking a final lap around Fenway.
Yaz's statue will capture the moment he tipped his helmet to Fenway faithful during his final at-bat, reports NESN. NESN also reports Yaz will throw out the first pitch on the day of his unveiling as the Sox take on the Blue Jays.
