The New York Yankees have placed shortstop Derek Jeter on the 15-day disabled list because of a left ankle injury, the team announced. The move effectively ends the captain's season.

General Manager Brian Cashman said the move was to protect Jeter and prevent the team from being tempted to use him in their pursuit of a playoff berth. Cashman said even if the team makes the playoffs, Jeter would not be available.

"The entire year has been pretty much a nightmare for me physically," Jeter told reporters.

This is Jeter's fourth stint on the DL since he broke his left ankle during a game against the Detroit Tigers in the 2012 postseason. The future Hall of Famer had reconstructive surgery on the ankle in the off-season, but seems to have had trouble properly strengthening the ankle. His doctor said that strengthening Jeter's ankle would take much more time than is left in the season.

Jeter said that he believes with a full off-season to heal and work on his ankle and leg strength he can return to the game in 2014. He added that he hasn't thought about the issue of his contract option.

In 17 games this year, the 39-year-old hit just .190 with 1 home run and 7 RBI.

Asked if Jeter's career could be over, Cashman replied to reporters: "I have not watched his last game. No one has."

Anticipating the DL move, the Yankees acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan, 31, from the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. A terrific defense shortstop, Ryan is not known for his bat: he is hitting .192 this season and has a .238 average over his seven-year career.
