LOWELL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Tyngsboro man has pleaded guilty to stabbing a Lowell woman after she allegedly told him she no longer wanted to be in a relationship, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced.

Peter Yates, 62, pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to charges of armed assault with intent to murder, home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery.

A judge sentenced Yates to a maximum of 12 1/2 years in prison.

Yates was also sentenced to five years probation on the home invasion charge to begin after the prison sentence. His probation is dependent on several conditions, including he stay away from and have no contact with the victim and her family, undergo alcohol evaluation and a mental health evaluation, and be subject to GPS monitoring.

Police in Lowell responded to 517 Chelmsford St. for a report of a stabbing at about 8 p.m. Sept. 16, 2012.

When officers arrived, they found the 50-year-old victim collapsed on her front lawn, bleeding from obvious stab wounds. She was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital where she underwent surgery to repair a severed vein and a punctured artery.

Following an investigation, authorities learned the victim and Yates had been friends for some time and then briefly dated that summer. The victim had allegedly sent Yates an email telling him not to contact her or her family.

In response, Yates allegedly went to her house and demanded to speak with her, authorities said. She came outside to speak with him and that is when Yates reportedly pulled a knife from his truck and stabbed her.

According to authorities, Yates followed the victim as she ran into her home and hit her over the head as she tried to call 911. The victim ran from the house and collapsed where police found her.

Yates was arrested at the scene.
