Grantville chief suspended after visit with Sheriff Joe Arpaio

GRANTVILLE, Ga. -

A Georgia police chief is in hot water over a meeting with a controversial Arizona sheriff.

Grantville Police Chief Doug Jordan was suspended with pay after meeting Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Jordan said he arranged to meet Sheriff Arpaio while on vacation.

"The sheriff is known as the toughest sheriff in the country. He is all about law enforcement. He is a legend," said Jordan.

By a 2-1 City Council vote, the chief was suspended under a city policy that required him to notify the city manager of anything that is "not routine in nature."

Grantville's city manager told FOX 5's Paul Yates that he had issued a verbal reprimand to the chief, but he said two council members wanted the chief fired.  According to the city manager, the suspension was a compromised measure.

Part of the controversy stems from the chief's discussion of the potential for Grantville officers to receive drug enforcement training in Arizona.

"I know Arizona. They have their needs there. But this is not Arizona. This is Georgia, and I am very proud of the services that our sheriff's department has done here," said City Councilmember Johnny Cooks.

Chief Jordan says he's received an outpouring of support and Grantville's mayor predicts the suspension will be reversed.

On his Facebook page Sheriff Arpaio said "I support Chief Doug Jordan 100%!  He should be rewarded for coming here and asking great questions to help him do his job!"

"I asked him for a visit, and he certainly accepted. I was honored, and I was glad to be there," Jordan said.

The Grantville chief is set to return to work at the police department next Tuesday.
