CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A teenager detained at a South Side police station was found hanging in his cell early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Eighteen-year-old Okoi Ofem was found hanging in his cell sometime overnight at the Chicago Police Department's 4th District Headquarters, 2255 E. 10rd St., authorities said.

Ofem, of the 8700 block of South Muskegon Avenue, was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital where he later died at 7:44 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday. A police spokesman could not immediately say why Ofem was in police custody.

Area South detectives were investigating.
