Mass. holds hearing on changes to bottle bill

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Supporters and opponents of Massachusetts' bottle bill law will get their chance to sound off before state lawmakers weighing changes to the statute.

The Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy will hold a public hearing at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the State House on more than a dozen bills aimed at updating the landmark 1982 law.

That law created a 5-cent deposit on carbonated beverage containers.

Activists have been trying for more than a decade to expand the law to include non-carbonated beverages like water, tea and sports drinks. Members of the beverage industry have resisted any sweeping expansion.

The hearing comes as environmental groups are proposing a ballot question for next year's election that would expand the law.
