Methuen man pleads guilty in fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — A Methuen man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the shooting death two years ago of another man during a confrontation on a Lawrence street.

Dionicio Paulino had faced a first-degree murder charge in connection with the August 2011 death of 19-year-old Gilmar Tobar, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge Monday. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the manslaughter charge and another four to five years on a firearms charge. Had he been convicted of first-degree murder, he would have faced a mandatory term of life in prison without parole.

The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1aPJdbf ) reports that prosecutors say the 20-year-old Paulino shot Tobar in the head in the early morning hours.

Paulino's lawyer described him as a good kid who had never before been in trouble.
