GOP's Baker to make first campaign stop in Lowell

Posted: Updated:

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Republican gubernatorial hopeful Charlie Baker is planning to make his first campaign stop since announcing his candidacy two weeks ago.

Baker says he will tour UMass-Lowell's Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center on Wednesday morning.

Baker's decision to hit the campaign trail follows Attorney General Martha Coakley's announcement on Monday that she's also launching a campaign for governor.

On Wednesday, the Democratic hopeful is planning to complete the last day of a three-day tour of the state with campaign stops in Lowell, Lawrence, Newburyport, Gloucester and Salem.

The two could cross paths. Coakley's first stop Wednesday morning is also in Lowell at the Owl Diner.

There are at least four other Democrats in the running for governor. Baker is the only Republican candidate.

Gov. Deval Patrick has said he won't seek re-election next year.
