NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

New concerns exist about the safety of the electrical systems along the Jersey Shore and that other boardwalks might be at risk of a fire like the devastating one that destroyed part of the boardwalk in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights.

Volunteers from Helping Hands of New Jersey replaced some of the boardwalk in Seaside Park that was charred by last Thursday's fire. The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office determined the blaze was accidental and caused by faulty wiring damaged in Superstorm Sandy.

The section of the boardwalk that was untouched by the fire was completely rebuilt after Sandy, and those businesses all have brand new wiring and electrical components.

In November 2012, the New Jersey Consumer Affairs Department advised that wiring underwater, if undamaged, did not need to be replaced. But some electrical contractors disagree and maintain any wiring that has been soaked needs to be removed. They say the risk of corrosion and fire is too great.

Because of this fire, the public safety commissioner in Wildwood said he will tour the boardwalk there with electrical inspectors to make sure none of the wiring was damaged by Sandy.
