BOSTON (AP) — Boston city councilors are tackling the question of who should get a vote on a proposed resort casino at Suffolk Downs.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and the owners of Suffolk Downs want the Nov. 5 referendum to be limited to residents of the East Boston neighborhood, where the 78-year-old track is located.
But some councilors are pushing for a citywide referendum, arguing the casino would impact all of Boston. Such a vote is allowable under the state's casino law with the backing of the council.
A hearing is scheduled for Friday at City Hall, with a decision expected next week.
The $1 billion casino proposed by Suffolk Downs and Caesars Entertainment could be in competition with proposals in Everett and Milford for the sole eastern Massachusetts resort casino license.
