SOUTH BERWICK, Maine ( – Youth soccer clubs in southern Maine are asking parents to remain silent during games this weekend.

According to, the Marshwood Travel Soccer Club and Kittery Soccer Club will ask parents to keep quiet during a mini soccer tournament on Saturday.

MTS board President Mark Villinski told the website that only referees and players will be allowed to speak during games. Parents and coaches are allowed to clap and praise teams when they score goals.

Organizers say they hope the concept will allow players to make their own decisions on the field and develop their instincts without parental suggestions.

Reaction to the request is mixed, Villinski told that some parents appreciated the idea while others thought it was ridiculous.
