Six students arrested, teacher breaks leg after multiple school fights

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Six students at Taft Digital Learning Center were arrested Thursday for fighting with other students, school staff members and police officers. The arrests stem from two separate fighting incidents.

The first one began just before noon in the school cafeteria. Two female students aged 15- and 19-years old began to fight when a staff member came over to break it up. The15-year-old began to attack the staff member, punching him and breaking his leg by stomping on it, police say. More students joined in on the fight and, in the end, police officers had five students in custody.

Two of those students are juveniles and were released to their parents. The remaining three students are adults and remain in police custody. Those three students will be arraigned on a later date on the charges of resisting and assaulting police.

The second incident that took place began around 3:30 p.m. Staff members say they spotted two male students fighting on school property. The school's safety officer approached the fight to break it up when one of the two students turned on the officer and began fighting with him, police say. The student is believed to have punched the school officer and began fighting with police officers when they came to the scene.

That student is an adult and remains in police custody waiting to be arraigned on the charges of resisting and obstructing a police officer, and assault and battery.
