Leominster voters weigh in on slots proposal

Posted: Updated:

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (AP) — Leominster voters are being asked if they support a slots parlor in the city.

The city is holding a referendum on Tuesday to determine whether a majority of residents support a proposal by Baltimore-based Cordish Cos. to build the state's only slots parlor under state gambling law.

Even if voters approve the casino, it still needs approval from the state gambling commission.

Cordish has proposed a $200 million, 125,000-square foot facility with 1,250 slot machines near the intersection of Interstate 190 and state Route 117. The proposal also includes two restaurants and a small concert hall.

Supporters say a slots parlor will bring jobs and tax revenue to the city.

Opponents say the casino would result in increased traffic and crime, as well as alcohol and gambling addictions.
