Mass. bicyclist on cross-country ride killed in Ohio

OTTAWA COUNTY, Ohio (MyFoxBoston.com) – A woman from Holliston was fatally struck by a car in Ohio Monday while participating in a cross-country benefit bicycle ride.

Ohio Highway Patrol officials said 21-year-old Emilee Gagnon was riding her bicycle from Holliston to San Francisco when she was hit by a car on Route 163 Monday evening.

Investigators said the driver of the car, 49-year-old Lynne Smith, was adjusting her sun visor because of glare when she hit Gagnon from behind. Gagnon was thrown from the bike.

Gagnon, a 2013 graduate of Westfield State University, was making the cross country trip to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis.

Officials at Westfield State said Gagnon was a Commonwealth Honors Scholar, the most prestigious recognition in the public higher education system. Gagnon was an art major and minored in French, as well as ethnic and gender studies.

"She was a wonderful, wonderful student who provided a lot of positive energy, joy and talent to the art department. She will be missed," said Professor Jamie Wainright, Chair, Westfield State's Art department.

Gagnon's pastor told FOX 25's Jessica Reyes that Gagnon beat ovarian cancer at age 13.

An investigation is ongoing.
