Former Middlesex DA retained by Somerville schools after camp rape case

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Former Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone has been hired by a committee reviewing overnight travel and field trips for Somerville Public Schools in the wake of serious allegations made against members of the high school's soccer team.

Leone, who currently works for Nixon Peabody LLP, will help the newly established School Safety Security Review Committee evaluate current protocols and procedures related to the school system's trips.

The group is expected to make a detailed recommendation to the Somerville School Committee and the superintendent on the planning, implementation, and supervision of any future student travel.

"I am pleased to Chair and collaborate with Somerville's School Safety and Security Review Committee as we assess the present policies and practices of the public schools, to continue the city's ongoing commitment to providing a healthy, safe and secure environment for students," stated Leone.

The review committee was established after three Somerville High School soccer players were accused of assaulting freshmen, one of which was allegedly raped with a broom, while attending Camp Lenox. One 17-year-old player, Galileo Mondol, was released on $100,000 bail Sept. 6 for his alleged connection to the Aug. 25 incident.

Prosecutors said witness accounts vary slightly, and that the rape victim said Mondol wasn't physically involved in attacking him. They further allege only one victim who was assaulted in the Aug. 25 incident, but not raped told investigators Mondol helped another defendant physically rape the victim with a broomstick. She said others said Mondol was present and encouraged the abuse.

Mondol's lawyer claims his client had nothing to do with the alleged rape and called the evidence against him "thin."

The identities of the other suspects were not released because they are 16.
