Testicle eating fish found in NJ lake

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Tom Boylan, 77, goes fishing on a daily basis. He usually catches carp at the bottom of Hughes Lake in Passaic, New Jersey. But on Saturday he caught something totally different: a pacu, native to Brazil. It is related to the piranha.

He was shocked.

Pacu are usually found in the Amazon River in South America or in the Pacific islands. They usually eat tree nuts that fall into the water. But it wasn't too long ago that two men from New Guinea reportedly died after a pacu consumed their testicles.

Mike Graziano, the manager of the Route 4 aquarium, said the pacu is also known as a tank buster because it can grow to four feet in length and get up to 60 pounds. He said that many times the fish grow too big for aquariums so people get rid of them illegally in local bodies of water.

Thankfully, Tom said, that in all his years fishing at Hughes Lake he hasn't seen anyone swimming in these waters.
