Neighbors Want Action For Hornets Nest

Posted: Updated:

Where huge hornets ‘nest hangs- dangerously- overhead, it's been growing larger all summer long and now neighbors want action!

Their calls to Philadelphia City Hall got them a visit from the health department but no follow-up and no action. So they turned to fox 29s Bruce Gordon.

No one on the 5700 block of North 7th street has been attacked by this massive nest of hornets yet. However, they do feel the sting of city services that can't perform basic tasks to keep them safe and secure.

Theresa Davis told us this watermelon-sized nest, full of bald-faced hornets, was no bigger than a baseball when she first noticed it back in June.

Now, the nest- hanging precariously from the limb of a large maple tree planted curbside by the city- threatens all who pass below.

Ayesha Faison gives the nest a wide berth when she comes and goes from her rowhouse, and she keeps her young nephew- and her own children- inside.

"And I don't want that falling down on nobody's head," Faison said. "I never got stung by a bee before and I don't want to."

Obviously, the neighbors are rather afraid of what's going to happen if this thing comes down. They weren't authorized to talk to me on-camera, but they made clear to the homeowners, they've got nothing more than a pick-up truck and a can of bug spray- nothing to tackle this second-story job.

Linda Mack watched our conversation and shook her head in disgust.

"You know, all the taxes we pay to the city, I would think that they would have the equipment to accommodate," Mack said.

The City's Parks & Recreation Department have not responded yet, but we do know the health department's policy is to spray the nest and kill the hornets.

If there are any apiarists out there with the right gear and the desire to safely move the nest-- we'd love to hear from you.
