Healthy Breast Tissue Collection to Happen in OC

Posted: Updated:

For the first time ever researchers will collect healthy breast tissue from women on the west coast, to study and compare it to cancerous tissue.

The study is led by Indiana University's Simon Cancer Center.  "The majority of the tissue that they have is from Caucasian women and African American women," said Lisa Wolter, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Orange County.

Researchers want to know if breast cancer and ethnicity are linked in any way.  That's where orange county comes in, because of the county's diversity, the tissue collection will happen here.  Susan G. Komen needs donors.

Jane Kaala Pang is a 71-year-old retired nurse; her husband is a breast cancer survivor.  "Therefore, the passion and desire to find the cure, was really critical," said Jane who's the perfect candidate.  Jane is Chinese and Japanese, born in Hawaii and participated in the study.

"A little aperture that went into the breast, then you heard a vacuum machine…  so there are four suction sounds and each time they pulled in a little tissue… there was no discomfort no pain," Jane said of the procedure.

To participate in the study Jane flew all the way to Indiana, but you won't have to, because the study is coming here.

The tissue collection is November 22ndat Memorial Medical Group at 11420 Warner Ave in Fountain Valley.

Women must be 18 or older, preferably of an ethnic minority, and have no history of breast cancer.

You must also register ahead of time here: http://komentissuebank.iu.edu/tissue-donors/register-to-donate/

The tool that's used to collect the breast tissue samples is about the width of a paper clip.  While some women can experience bleeding or bruising, the amount of pain you're likely to feel is very small, compared to the big impact you could make to research.

An NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired. The police department asked its Twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others decided to not "play nice, " sharing beating photos and more.
