Kenny "The Car Guy" Walters, from Mufflers and More in Walled Lake, says make sure the vehicle is ready for icy and snowy weather to ensure your family's safety and to maintain your car's good condition. Preventative maintenance helps keep car driving steady, and up front costs are often less expensive than emergency repairs.

Check fluid levels
 -Brake fluids
 -Transmission fluids

Check Antifreeze
-Should have a 50:50 ratio of water and antifreeze.
-Buy pre-mixed to get the right formula.

Check coolant
 -Includes radiator pressure.
-Examine hoses for cracks or bulges.

Check brakes
-Make sure rotors and pads are in good shape.
-If not, may be time to have brakes serviced.

Check tires
-Tires maintain proper traction on icy, snowy roads.
 -Check air pressure.
-See if they're worn or too smooth.
 -Check tread depth.
 -Have tires rotated quarterly.

Consider investing in snow tires
-They are made with rubber compounds that resist low temps and grip the ground even under unplowed snow.

Check Windshield
 -Refill windshield fluid.
-Replace wiper blades whenever you notice cracks, skids or uneven wiping.

Check Battery
 -Cold weather reduces battery capacity.
-Make sure all terminals fit tightly together
-If battery is 3 years or older, have a mechanic perform a cold cranking power test.
-Park in garages as much as possible.

Stock up
-Keep an emergency kit in car
-Flare, blankets, jumper cables, boots, a radio, flashlight extra engine oil, washer fluid, salt
