AG's Office to review charities, fundraisers launched in wake of bombings

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office has distributed surveys to the many charities and fundraisers that raised money after the Boston Marathon bombings in an effort to ensure transparency and public accountability.

"In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, there was an overwhelming outpouring of support for victims, and I commend all of those generous and compassionate efforts," AG Coakley said. "We are now asking those organizations that raised, solicited, and received charitable donations to supply us with information to account for those donations and their appropriate charitable use."

The survey will be sent to charitable organizations and fundraisers who raised funds or received donations, including organizations that raised money for One Fund Boston and individuals, small groups of people, and companies that joined with existing emergency response charities and raised millions of dollars in just a few months.

The surveys will ask for information about the amount of money that has been raised, how that money was raised, and how the funds have been used. The AG's Office will produce a report on the survey responses, which will be available online when completed.

Other states have issued similar surveys in the wake of tragedies or natural disasters.

In August, the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA), the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), One Fund Boston and Attorney General Martha Coakley's Victim Services Division launched a Collaborative to offer the services of trained specialists to help victims and their families in identifying and accessing programs available to meet their unique needs.

AG Coakley has also charged three individuals with attempting to defraud One Fund Boston, including a New York woman and a pair of brothers from Boston.
