Prosecutors say worries about Bulger assets unfounded

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Prosecutors have told a judge that concerns that prosecutors will secretly seize assets of gangster James "Whitey" Bulger are unfounded.

The filing Friday responded to a motion by lawyers for the estate of a woman murdered in the 1980s. They asked a judge to reject prosecutors' request that Bulger forfeit $25 million, saying it would allow the government to secretly seize and keep Bulger's assets. They asked the judge to appoint a special investigator to determine Bulger's assets so they can be distributed to victims.

But prosecutors said the concerns have "no basis in fact or law" because the court controls and oversees any seizures of Bulger's assets. They say any Bulger assets they collect will go to his victims.

Bulger was convicted in August in 11 of 19 murders in a racketeering indictment.
