New plan to fight blight in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit's strategy for tackling blight was introduced at Wayne State University on Friday. Business boss and developer Dan Gilbert was named as a co-chair of Detroit's new blight revitalization task force.

Roy Roberts was named as land czar. His primary job? Fight blight. It's a pledge from Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr.

John George, founder of Motor City Blight Busters, has been fighting decay in Detroit for 25 years. "Kevyn Orr said it best when he said that money should be spent on blight removal, police and fire. Clean and safe. That's really what we've been talking about and working on for the last quarter century," George says.

George says dedication and focus can lead to a better Detroit, "We believe that if we can put our petty differences aside and focus, we can build community centers, coffee shops, urban farms, and jazz clubs and cafes. And we know that because we've done it."

The task force begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. You can help. The address is 17336 Lahser. George says bring some gloves, some water, and a good attitude.
