Possible bus driver strike could impact thousands of Mass. students

Posted: Updated:

BROCKTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Parents of the 9,000 students bused to and from schools in Brockton could be forced to seek alternate transportation Monday due to an ongoing contract dispute between a private busing contractor and the bus drivers union.

Superintendent Kathleen Smith learned Friday that contract negotiations between First Student, which serves several school systems in Massachusetts, and Teamsters Local 653 have stalled and a job action could result.

If a strike happens and buses do not run, parents should make plans to drop their children off and pick them up at school.

School officials are putting plans in place in the event a strike does occur. According to the Brockton Public Schools website, if the buses do not run Brockton High School will open at 6 a.m. Monday and all middle and elementary schools will open at 7 a.m. to accommodate early drop offs.

"I remain optimistic that First Student and Teamsters Local 653 will be able to settle their contract, but I feel it is important to give parents as much information as possible so that they can plan accordingly. We are their partners in your child's education, and we need to work together for the good of all students," said Superintendent Smith.

As of Sunday afternoon, First Student Transportation had not reached a contract agreement with its drivers.

FOX 25 has reached out to First Student and Teamsters Local 653 for comment. It is unclear at this time whether or not other school systems could be impacted by the potential strike.

First Student is required by contract to provide transportation services through June 30, 2015.
