ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's top judge says the state's court system has had to cut expenses and learn to live within its means during the recent economic downturn.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Hugh Thompson began his four-year term as chief justice last month. He succeeds former Chief Justice Carol Hunstein, who remains on the court.

The judiciary's financial struggles aren't new, but Thompson says the focus now is on incrementally building back as the economy rebounds.

Some additional challenges in the coming years include a growing and increasingly diverse population in the state. That could put increasing strains on the courts.

Thompson said his main goal as top judge is to build consensus and to ensure that the law is applied fairly and consistently in the state.
