Atlanta pauses to honor Evelyn Lowery

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Hundreds of people paid their respects this week to civil rights leader Evelyn Lowery on Monday.  The wife of Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery died last week after suffering a stroke, and a public viewing began for Mrs. Lowery on Monday morning.

Mrs. Lowery suffered a stroke earlier this month, and she passed away last week.  She was 88 years old.

Lowery was the founder of SCLC/Women, Inc. the sister organization to the historic civil rights organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the creator of the annual Drum Major of Justice Awards that is held annually in April in Atlanta, GA.

While Lowery was best known for her civil and voting rights efforts, many said she opened doors for women.

"A lot of times in a movement, men are in charge and Mrs. Lowery clearly understood there was a role for women and she set out to make that happen," said former SCLS board member Brenda Davenport.

A public viewing was held at Cascade United Methodist Church on Cascade Road in Atlanta from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Then, on Wednesday, October 2, a home-going celebration will be held for Mrs. Lowery.  It will take place at Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College.  There will be a viewing from 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., followed by a celebration at 11 a.m.
