This is the time of year we're used to hearing about the big flu forecast. The feds talk about what strains to look out for and how big or bad it could be, but for now you'll hear nothing from the CDC.

Michiganders can't help but wonder how bad the government shutdown will affect us locally. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson shares his opinion, saying we won't even notice.

He tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom, "The only people who are going to notice if the federal government shuts down are the hundreds of thousands of federal employees who live and work around Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland. But the rest us, in the 49 states, we're not going to notice, nor are we going to give a damn. I think shutting down might just get their attention. So I say shut it down - and keep it shut down."

Maureen Taylor, of Michigan Warfare Rights Organization, also shares her thoughts. "[The shutdown] is going to mean life and death for a significant portion of the population that welfare rights serves."

The effects of a shutdown could trickle down to welfare mothers and their children, veterans, the disabled and the elderly by the weekend.

"I'm at the point now where I'm questioning whether nonviolence in the way to go. I'm almost there. I'm on the fence. I'm thinking, 'You know what? Maybe we should pick up a Bible and throw it at one of them. ... Maybe we should pick up the Koran and throw it at one of them. Maybe we better pick up some religious documents and throw it at these people.' But I don't even think it would work," Taylor adds.

"You're not going to threaten me with a shutdown. There's nothing that I get from the government. The only people who are going to feel it are those who are on some kind of public assistance. And they've assured them your social security checks are going through, your disability checks will go through. If you're in the military you're going to get your pay," Brooks says.

For him, the bottom line is: Stop going deeper and deeper into debt and stop spending dollars you just don't have.

He says, "What do I say to Washington? Go to hell, that's my three words. I really am fed of with them, tired of it. It's not the same country when I joined the army 40 years ago. I've just lost so much confidence in my federal government, I really have."
