Consumers start buying insurance on Ga. exchanges

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia consumers have started buying health insurance on federally run exchanges.

The electronic exchange run by the U.S. government for Georgia residents formally opened to consumers on Tuesday.

Those exchanges are at the heart of President Barack Obama's restructuring of the health care system.

The outreach and advocacy director of Georgians For A Healthy Future, Amanda Ptashkin, says she's encouraging residents to take their time and make an informed selection. The coverage they buy starting today won't take effect until Jan. 1.

Across the country, people trying to buy insurance reported glitches, which state and federal officials blamed on extremely high demand.
