Detroiters register for new health care plans

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Despite the shutdown of the federal government, and a few minor technical hiccups, Detroiters registered today for new health care plans made available by The Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare." The National Action Network aided in the registration process.

Rev. Charles Williams oversees the Detroit chapter of the National Action Network which held the Affordable Care Act registration drive. "These are difficult times for people and employers aren't giving out the same kind of healthcare they used to give out," he tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

The government's health care website, healthcare.gov, had so much traffic during its launch today that it was unavailable for hours. Many determined Detroiters, however, pushed on and completed paper applications, eager to begin the path to regular checkups, and emergency room and urgent care coverage.

But critics say the Affordable Care Act may not be so affordable. Some studies suggest the program will cost an average American family of four more than seven thousand dollars over the course of nine years. Another gripe is, because the online healthcare exchanges were offline today, those who registered by paper don't know exactly what they qualify for yet or what it will cost them.

By pen or by keyboard, those wanting sign up for a new health care plan under the assistance of the National Action Network can still do so at the King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit until 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
