DPD changing raid policy after school scare

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

The Detroit Police Department says its changing its policy for carrying out a raid.

The changes cannot be disclosed at this time, but they come less than 24 hours after the DPD carried out a raid at a house across the street from Pasteur Elementary School. School officials are believed to have not known of the raid beforehand and, consequently, students were outside on the playground at the time when the raid began. Teachers instructed students inside immediately when they saw what was happening, but on the way inside the building students heard the sound of gunshots and some began to run inside.

DPD has since confirmed those gunshots were fired because officers had to put down two dogs.

A letter was sent home from the school's principal informing the parents of the incident.

Assistant Chief Eric Jones said in a news conference Wednesday he can understand the concerns of many parents. "I am just as concerned as they are. I have children, and if a search warrant was executed while my child was on the playground, I'm not going to sit up here and say I wouldn't be upset. I would be. We all are. Fortunately, no one was injured and we are re-examining our policies. In fact, we have reconfigured them overnight. So, the chance that it will happen again has been significantly minimized."

Detroit Public Schools also released a statement Tuesday saying:

"The safety and security of our students and staff is one of our top priorities at Detroit Public Schools. When any incident occurs we follow our safety protocols to ensure that no harm comes to those in our charge, and the school promptly notified parents of this event."
- Jen Mrozowski, DPS spokeswoman
