BOSTON (AP) - The state gambling commission has cleared Penn National Gaming to bid for the sole slots parlor license available under the 2011 Massachusetts casino law.
The five-member panel voted unanimously to qualify Penn National after a background check. The company hopes to operate a slots parlor at the Plainridge harness race track in Plainville.
Penn National signed an option to purchase the track after the current owners were disqualified by the commission from bidding for a slots parlor because of financial improprieties.
The company will compete with slots proposals in Raynham and Leominster. The commission plans a public hearing on Monday to review the three applications.
Also Thursday, the commission is holding a qualifying hearing for Mohegan Sun. The Connecticut casino operator has proposed a $1 billion resort casino in Palmer.
