LACONIA, N.H. (AP) — A driver accused of crashing into two 14-year-old girls at a crosswalk in Laconia, N.H., killing one of them, has been indicted on felony charges.

Fifty-two-year-old Amy Lafond was scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Thursday, but instead learned that a Belknap County grand jury indicted her, reports WMUR.

A judge set bail at $50,000 cash or $100,000 surety.

Lafond is facing manslaughter and two alternate counts of negligent homicide in the April crash.

Prosecutors said she was speeding and under the influence of prescription drugs when she hit two girls standing on a sidewalk at a crosswalk. Killed was 14-year-old Lilyanna Johnson. Her friend, 14-year-old Alyssa Miner, was seriously injured.

The case is expected to head to trial in about a year.

Belknap County Attorney Melissa Guldbrandsen said Lafond also was talking on her cellphone at the time.

"She plows into the two girls -- again, who are up on the sidewalk in the crosswalk -- and then her vehicle doesn't come to a stop until it goes around the car that was stopped at the crosswalk in the other direction," Guldbrandsen said. "And she ends up on the curb on the other side in her original lane of travel."

Defense attorney John Bresaw said he hasn't had a chance to review the evidence. He said his client's behavior in the time since the crash and her arrest shows that she isn't a threat to the community and has been cooperative.
