A newly minted budget deal to avert future government shutdowns gained important ground Wednesday among House Republicans who are more accustomed to brinkmanship than compromise, even though it would nudge federal deficits higher three years in a row.

The 16-day partial government shutdown is all but certain to figure prominently in Thursday's final sparring match between candidates in the governor's race. And that could be a problem for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

WASHINGTON, DC -

A lot of furloughed workers aren't wasting any time filing for unemployment benefits. Unemployment offices in D.C. and Maryland are being flooded with online applications.

Over in Virginia it’s the same deal but you have to fill out a special paper application and mail it in.

Eligibility for unemployment benefits depends on what you make. And you have to produce wage documentation like a W-2.

Going into the office instead of filing online doesn't get you preferred treatment or speed up the process.

Virginia Employment Commission: http://www.vec.virginia.gov/
If you worked at or for a Federal Government Agency through an outside contractor and have been separated from your job as a result of the shutdown, you should file your claim for unemployment through our traditional methods online at www.vec.virginia.gov or through our Customer Contact Centers at 866-832-2363.
