Dept. of Health: Don't delay, get flu shot today

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's flu season, and Chicago's health department is enlisting the help of local celebrities in a citywide campaign.

Flu shots are available all over the city. Chicago's Department of Public Health got sports celebrities to let people know they're taking the shot, and they're calling it your best defense.

Gonzalo Segares, a defenseman for the Chicago Fire, sparked excitement at the Little Village community council. He and others including Super Bowl Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka are part of the city's campaign to encourage everyone to get a flu shot. The health department decided that sports stars will convince Chicagoans a flu shot will keep them from being sidelined.

"I gotta stay healthy for my long season, and I always get my shot once a year. Definitely encouraging people to come over and get theirs," Segares said.

"This is a working class community. People need services, resources. And the free flu shot is something that we are glad to provide for our community," a clinic worker said.

"CDPH is also hosting 60 flu vaccine clinics in neighborhoods across Chicago until the end of the year and has five fast track immunization clinics," a CDPH spokesman said.

Health officials say getting the flu shot early will protect individuals and help stop the spread of flu.
